17-month-old Roy Jones brutally murdered for acting like a girl

Strong trigger warning for graphic description of abuse and murder.

A 17-month-old infant assigned male at birth, Roy Antonio Jones III,was killed by his mother’s boyfriend for acting too much like a girl.

Pedro Jones was babysitting Roy Jones (no biological relation) at the Shinecock Indian Reservation. When the less-than-two-year-old baby failed to fulfill his caretaker’s idea of what a less-than-two-year-old boy should act like, Pedro Jones began beating the infant with closed fists all over his body and then choking him. The child went into cardiac arrest, and later died at the hospital.

Pedro Jones has pled not guilty. He also admitted to abusing his victim in the past:

“I was trying to make him act like a boy instead of a little girl...I never struck that kid that hard before. A one-time mistake and I am going to do 20 years...

A tribe spokeswoman said the whole tribe is in mourning, but the child's grandfather said, "He infiltrated my family through our trust, through the heart of my daughter and then stole the life of her child. I hope the justice system turns around and steals his."

All human beings are expected to meet certain gender requirements based on their sex assignment at birth - from presentation to personality, expectations based on genitalia are cruelly enforced. Though everyone’s gender presentation and performance is policed and punished, these standards are applied with particular stringency andviolence to trans folks.

Rather than being exempt from these unfair and unforgiving norms, children are especially targeted for rigid gender training, particularly children assigned male at birth like Roy. As Julia Serano has written, femininity is heavily discouraged and punished in MAAB folks; the worst thing a man or boy can be is like a woman or girl. This particularly nasty brand of cissexism is the frequent cause of abuse, in this case fatal abuse.

But this is not just about cissexism; it’s also about ageism and the violence infants and children face for being infants and children. Children who do not meet gender norms (according to whatever always-arbitrary standard imposed upon them) are particularly vulnerable to abusive behavior from adult caretakers.

The context of this child’s cultural history is also vital to understanding the conditions of this terrible tragedy. Native people have been massacred, devalued, and dehumanized by the forces of the United States government’s racism and violence. While violent abuse and death as manifestations of cissexism and ageism are far from unique to Native society, the genocide enacted by the kyriarchy on Native society is one factor in the abuse children like Roy suffer.

Roy Jones is the victim of an abusive, terrible man. But Pedro Jones did not act alone; he is an enforcer of the greater social forces of cissexism, ageism, and racism. Roy Antonio Jones III is a victim of the abuse of both his caretaker and the kyriarchy.

BARTOW, Fla. (AP) - Bail has been denied for a 42-year-old central Florida man accused of stabbing a friend to death and then drinking his blood.

A judge denied bail for Mauricio Mendez Lopez who made his first court appearance Thursday. In court Lopez said he had been drinking and had no memory of the incident which happened Sunday.

Lopez was picked up Wednesday after he was spotted by a citizen. He is accused of killing Macario Cruz in a house they shared in Bartow.

A third resident, Cruz's sister-in-law Mariella Mendez, told police that Lopez fatally stabbed Cruz because he was having an affair with her. Lopez is the uncle of Mendez and Cruz's wife, who lives in Mexico.

A police report shows the men had an argument in which Lopez struck Cruz in the face with a 15-pound dumb bell. He then allegedly threatened to kill them both unless the relationship ended.

Authorities say Lopez returned later and stabbed Cruz to death. Mendez told police Lopez left with a plastic cup in his hand that appeared to hold blood. She said he drank from the cup in a strange ritual from their native Mexico.

Several reports said all of the adults in the home are illegal immigrants.

Lopez is being held in a Polk County Jail. It was not immediately known if he has an attorney.

BOAZ, Ala. (CBS/WHNT) Police in a Boaz, Ala. Wal-Mart busted five people allegedly involved in a cell phone theft spree that previously targeted Wal-Marts in Georgia and Florida.

Store security guards contacted police Sunday, July 25 because they believed the perps, a woman, two men, and two men dressed as women, were stealing various merchandise.

Police rushed to the scene and apprehended Precious Darnika Humphrey, 19, Terrell Marquae Jolly, 21, Jarquez Levell Dancy 23, and Trevor Devante Baker, 18. The identity of the fifth suspect is unknown because he or she is a minor, reports CBS affiliate WHNT.

Altogether the suspects had 19 new, packaged cell phones in their possession.

Boaz Police Chief Terry Davis told The Gadsden Times that the two men who were dressed as women usually dress that way and were not attempting to disguise themselves.

Police say they discovered the suspects had been involved in numerous cell phone thefts totaling $70,000.

Apparently, the Boaz police were not the only force who had been searching for them, says WHNT.

To name a few, the Guntersville Police, Talladega Police, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, and Cullman Police, as well as police in Snellville and Marietta, Georgia, and Wal-Mart Asset Protection, were all looking into the case.

According to WHNT, each of the suspects is charged with receiving stolen property in the first degree, and two of the adults are also charged with first degree theft of property, stemming from a theft at the Wal-Mart in Guntersville on July 13, in which $6,500 in cell phones were taken.

Man Accused of Spraying Women With Bodily Fluid

A man sprayed a woman with semen in a grocery store this month, and police believe she wasn't his only victim.

A woman was in line at the Giant grocery store in the 800 block of Muddy Branch Road on July 15 when she noticed a man staring at her, according to the Gaithersburg Police Department. The man followed her as she left and sprayed a liquid on her back.

Police determined the liquid was human semen.

Witnesses saw the man drive away in a gray vehicle, police said.

Michael Wayne Edwards Jr.

Authorities were able to use DNA in their investigation, News4's Jackie Bensen reported.

Police arrested Michael Wayne Edwards Jr.Wednesday.

During their interview with Edwards, investigators learned the Giant victim wasn't the first, police said. Anyone who believes they've been a victim of Edwards should call police at 301-258-6400.

Edwards was charged with second-degree assault but could face more charges. He was released on $4,000 bond.
